The More Things Change....

What's the saying? The more things change, the more they stay the same? Interesting news out of Vietnam today...too bad it's from 1967 and mirrors a certain news story making waves across the U.S. today.

SEPTEMBER 3, 1967 NEW YORK TIMES
U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror
by Peter Grose, Special to the New York Times

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam's presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting.
According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong.
....A successful election has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam. The election was the culmination of a constitutional development that began in January, 1966, to which President Johnson gave his personal commitment when he met Premier Ky and General Thieu, the chief of state, in Honolulu in February.

The purpose of the voting was to give legitimacy to the Saigon Government, which has been founded only on coups and power plays since November, 1963, when President Ngo Dinh Deim was overthrown by a military junta.

I was reading an interesting but sad story in my local fishwrap today. Thackery's Books, an independent bookstore icon in the Toledo area, is closing its doors. Guess who's moving in down the street? A big national chain store that's sure to have the same personality and service as Thackery's. I'm sure Joe Blow working at the store will have the same kind of rapport with customers that the owner of Thackery's had. I'm sure he will have the same love of literature that the owner of Thackery's has. What a freaking pathetic piece of garbage. Our culture is being gobbled up by the Wal-Mart's of the world and company executives that sit in some board room and try to determine what's best for the consumer, shoving this garbage down our throats. They can all f*$k off.

P.S. Where's the love Ted? Next time I come back to this blog, I want to see a link for my column, damn't. I know I won't be writing about Marquette basketball, but you can read rants on the Lions, Tigers and Red Wings (oh wait, they're not playing those spolied babies).

If you hate the Wal-Marts and other Republican-filled companies, why do you vote and support their candidates (George W Bush) and put them in positions of great power?

What does my post about a local bookstore have to do with political issues? The reason Thackery's is closing up is because there was a steady decline in business. He wasn't making enough money to stay open. A quote in the story from him said (and I paraphrase) "It's my fault. This store was always a wonderful hobby of mine, but I should've done better with the business side of things." I was just voicing my displeasure in national chain stores and their lack of culture and creativity. Wal-mart and other stores like it have every right to do what they're doing, even if I despise it. They have every right to herd people in like cattle and take their money. I choose not to support them, and my decision has nothing to do with politics. I like to spend my dollars in the local economy and help my neighbors stay in business.

P.S. I'm impressed. You spelled Petr's name right. At least the Toledo Storm are still playing.

I agree with your opinion on supporting local stores and the independent business man/woman. However, I don't think you can separate Wal-Mart (or Wal-mart-like stores) from the fat cats controlling our government right now, saying you support one side (George Bush) and hate the other (wal-mart) who fund him and put him in office. It seems you want to be against the big businesses which gobble up the small ones, but then supporting a President who is in bed with these companies which do that very thing seems a little odd. Just an observation.

Mr Moto brought both hands up, curved his fingers to fit the tempting mounds loosely cupped and hefted the substantial, dangling tit bags. Clifford was by no means six foot tall nor built like a lumberjack, and his resemblance to his father never did gain beyond a few hintsaround the ears.
